Apple reported to use OLED displays for upcoming iPhones; Japan Display’s shares plunged by 10 percent

OLED might be the default display choice for the next iPhones.

STS ASIA, SOUTH KOREA – In a report published by South Korea’s Electronic Times, Apple has decided to use organic light emitting diodes (OLED) screens in its upcoming iPhone models planned for next year. This report alone, sent Japan Display’s shares down by 10 percent. Japan Display is one of the main suppliers of iPhone’s liquid crystal display (LCD) screens,

Citing multiple unnamed industry sources, the report said that Apple is already on the process of planning new iPhone models, and has decided that all three upcoming models would use OLED panels.

The display maker plans to start mass-production of OLED panels from 2019, and it is still looking for new investors to finance their production line.

“The company has been just so slow in catching up with South Korean rivals in OLED,” said Masayuki Otani, chief market analyst at Securities Japan.

On the other hand, shares in its competitor LG Display raised by 5 percent, as it is rumored to be selected to supply Apple’s demand for OLED displays on its upcoming iPhone models.
