STS ASIA, Japan – Sharp has unveiled their latest flagship smartphone in the name of Aquos R2.
The Japanese multi-national company might have been not known for making phones – they’re more popular on the TV and other electronics category so far, yet Sharp has did some phones already such as the Aquos S3 with Android One and others.
Just like any other 2018 smartphone, the Aquos R2 has an almost bezel-less display, as well as a notch that looks more like the one on the Essential Phone. Also, it does have typical camera configurations such as dual rear cameras and a single front camera which is housed inside the small notch.
A six-inch (6″) 19:9 aspect ratio display with a high-speed IGZO panel complements the overall design, along with its WQHD+ (1440 x 3040 px) resolution.
Inside the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, paired with 4GB of memory and 64GB of internal storage. There’s the option to expand the storage up to 400GB with the use of a microSD card. All of these are powered by Android 8.0 in terms of software as well as a not-so-big 3130mAh battery is present to power the phone. The Aquos R2 is also water-and dust-resistant.
While it boast a similar camera design to most smartphones of 2018, the dual rear camera implementation on the Aquos R2 is different. A 16.3-megapixel sensor exists solely for video recording and a 22.6-megapixel sensor for just taking photos (what?).
The video-only camera shoots up to 4K video in ultra-wide angle with the help of AI (artificial intelligence), while the other sensor can automatically shoot photos while recording video.
Here’s how the said feature works (video from Sharp):
Finally, the Aquos R2 is touted by Sharp as the world’s first phone to have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos together – a combination of powerful image processing along with impressive sound quality is a delight for content consumers.
